| 'Bahareque' are well-known in the
UK Latin community, starting initially as a 'protest' group during the Chilean
exile era. After the fall of Pinochet, it metamorphosed slowly into its
present form, with occasional changes to the line-up. There are five different
countries represented by the six musicians: Vicky (Bolovia), Kena &
Tina (Venezuela), Suzuki (Argentina), Fernando (Ecuador), & Colin (UK)
playing a wide variety of instruments: zampona, quena, cuatro, charango,
harp, guitar, maracas, carrasca. They naturally have a lot of demand, for ‘gigs' from the Latin community but also play extensively outside these circles. Their tours abroad have included Spain, France, Italy and Bulgaria (to a TV audience of 8 million). The repertoire ranges from Guantanameran to Mexican ramantic ballads, Paraguayan polkas, Andean huaynos, Venezuelan joropos, Chilean cuecas, Colombian cumbias & much more. The band comprises of Kena (Lead vocals, percussion & guitar), who commenced her singing career at 9 years of age, with La Coral de los Niños - Cantores de Carabobo, for two years, performing at cities across the country. As a “Bachillerato” student, she represented her college on two occasions at national level, in the “Festival de La Voz Liceista”. Suzuki (guitar & vocals), was born in Buenos Aires and graduated as a National Music Teacher (speciality: guitar ), from the Universidad Nacional del Litoral. She toured Argentina , Uruguay and Brazil with the Chamber Music Group (consisting of 20 guitars), created and led by Uruguayan composer & conductor Guido Santorsola. Her extensive musical career has centred on the provinces of Santa Fe (her home city), Cordoba and Entre Rios (where she also conducted the Victoria City Municipal Choir). She has played in various duos and trios which include; Fiol- Mendoza (popular and classical) and Barrionuevo-Fiol (repertoire from outstanding Argentinian and Latin-American composers) and Percal/Arcana (Latin American Popular Fusion), not forgetting performances on Argentinian National Radio and concerts around the country. She became a member of “Bahareque” in January 2003, shortly after arriving in the UK. Fernando (charango, guitar & vocals), was born and raised in Quito, his formal musical education starting at the age of 16, when he was accepted by Equador's National Music Conservatory. After graduation, he decided to concentrate on developing his expertise on the charango and thus, tended to play mainly with groups specialising in Andean rhythms & repertoires. He moved to London in 1992, became a member of ‘Bahareque' in 1999 and also contributed as a charango player and guitarist, for the “Estrellas Para Ti” CD released in 2001. Kent born Gordon (Venezuelan and Paraguayan harps), was educated at Suffolk’s Woolverstone Hall School and at Magdalen College (Oxford). He gathered no musical accomplishments until his appointment as Venezuelan correspondent to BBC’s World Service. Soon after his arrival, heard Juan Vicente Torrealba on early morning national radio and resolved to learn to play the harp, doing so at the Casa de Juventud in Caracas, under the tuition of the renowned musician, Ramon Narvaez. He continued his studies on his return to London, with Welshman Bill Morgan, a noted Paraguayan harpist, subsequently gaining further experience, playing with Latin Americans at events across the UK, in France, Italy and Spain. Vicky (Zamponyas /Panpipes, Quena, Quenachos(Bamboo flutes), percussion & vocals), was born and brought up in La Paz, Bolivia. As co-founder of the London-based band “Inti-Raymi” with whom she performed at many prestigious World Music Festivals across Britain, she has also toured both in Europe (Holland & Germany) and Africa (Gambia and Tunisia), proudly promoting and developing the musical forms and rhythms of Bolivia and Latin America. She joined “Bahareque” in 1997. A typical performance is for up to 2 x 45 minute sets |
